My grandfather, John C Balog, Sr., was one of the founding families that built this church. Bird town was created as a place to live for those immigrants that worked for Union Carbide, and my grandfather worker as a truck driver for them. They lived on Halstead Avenue where my father, John C Balog, Jr. was born in 1922. This was a church where everyone knew one another, cared for one another, and learned the Christian life. It was warm, caring, incredibly fun, and Sunday's there were a part of our lives we would look forward to every week. Our parents formed "The Calvin Group" and they would do monthly or bi-monthly get-togethers at one another's houses. No church atmosphere could ever replace this, and for the years the church was open, it was a unique and wonderful part of my life.
